O HOMEM QUE DESAPRENDEU A SORRIR
(Uma história real)
JB Xavier

Aproximei-me e percebi que ele, distraído, pintava azulejos.

Outro soco no estômago.

Relutantemente eu aceitei as quatro pinturas, enquanto lhe perguntava.

“Obrigado”.

THE MAN WHO UNLEARN TO SMILE
(A real story)
JB Xavier

Hear the inaudible and see the invisible are rare skills. However the most important messages we receive are as a rule, for underlying these pathways. I say this because they usually get the most unusual way possible, no matter how much we think we are prepared to receive them.

Yesterday afternoon, I needed to go downtown, and it took me to decide if going by subway or car. If I had gone underground, this story would have another outcome. Who can tell when the wheels of fate begin to moveitself?

I left the car in a parking lot in Santa Iphigenia Square, and walked across the causeway of the same name, at the end of which is the São Bento monastery, founded in 1598, (photo) famous for its punctual clock reminiscent of the London Big Ben ones, and also for having been the abode of Pope upon his last visit to Brazil.

The monastery, imposing and austere, is itself a monument; a point of the city's oldest. São Bento Square is the confluence of the flyover coming from Santa Iphigenia Square, very traditional streets of São Bento, Florencio de Abreu and Boa Vista. A few blocks away are the courtyard of the College, where the City of São Paulo was born.

Having overcome a very serious problem a few days ago, I walked, abstracted by the historical beauty of the city from that point when I decided to enter the church of the monastery, and under his benevolent silence and stillness, to thank the Supreme Being for solving my problem, which, say by the way, deserves a chronic, such was the novelty of its solution.

As I approached the monastery, I thought about the flow - visible and invisible - to which we belong and on the powerful levers that are put in motion, inside plans far beyond our knowledge and perception, when the desire is sincere, and hope, deep.

The monastery is surrounded by a low iron fence, and when I left the overpass, I a saw a man sitting against the fence on the floor, just a hundred feet of the temple door, painting anything.

I approached and realized that he, distracted, painted glaze tiles. In front of him, a shoe box lid containing paints in shades diffuse mixtures whose only he could distinguish.

He anointed the fingers with ink and, in rapid touches, spread it on the whiteness of a tile. The magic that happened then was something too powerful not to be admired: the white glaze tile was rapidly acquiring life, depth, perspective, color, joy and delight, as to be exciting to see such a metamorphosis.

It's easy to do..."murmured the artist: “I mean, the technique, because the inspiration comes from God... "

On top of the tower, the clock of the monastery rang once. 15:20. I looked at the tower and thought, "What are you trying to show me?"

I looked down and remained standing before the man painting increasingly enchanted with the magic that the "John Doe" produced.

Then I crouched down, determined to absorb at least part of his incredible technique, whose reductionismeffects was an absurd.

Still crouched beside him, I continued to follow the artist, sitting on the dusty ground in his creation of great beauty.

As he painted, the artist was explaining to me how he invented the "tools" with which he worked: A swab, made with barbecue stick and a single toothpick. That was all he had, besides the magic fingers.

"I use oil paint" - he said - "but without oil, because it costs too much."

I thought then the quantity and quality of paints available to me to paint my pictures, and a quiet place, silence, numerous brushes, and much more...

Forgetting the rest of the world I kept watching him in silence, and he, noting the attention that I accompanied his work, asked: "Do you also paint?" And I replied, trying to make fun: "Until I see you working I thought I was a painter.”The artist remained serious and I realized I was not been funny. But I persisted and asked how much he charged to paint each tile. "Six dollars" - he said.

"Ridiculous!" - I thought, unaware of what six dollars meant for the man.

Then I watched him more closely. He was a swarthy, sunburnt complexion, perhaps much younger than the apparent 40 years, because I perceived that the street castigated him very hardly. But in his wrinkles, there was the story of a life where one could easily read a latent anxiety. However it was his serious countenance that caught my attention. I had not seen a hint of smile in his stern face, just a man who stood before me paintingthe joy!

I got twelve dollars and put on your legs. "I'll have to move forward to resolve some issues. I'll be back in about an hour. Paint two tiles for me, please. "He immediately replied:" Take your money and pay when you return. "But I had already risen and, in a nod, I said goodbye.

That meeting ended up being me late for the task I had to do in the downtown, so I decided to visit the temple only on my return.

About an hour later I was back, and before going to the artist, I entered the temple of the monastery much more willing to acknowledge than to ask.

Although born in the Catholic faith, I am not a supporter of religion. I enter any temple where there is peace and honesty, because God never had religion. It is the religions that believe to have God. I have long been guided by the ballads of the great troubadour Alfredo de Castro:

I believe in God with deep
sense of clarity,
but in the God who made the world,
not in the God the World made!

So, I thanked the depths of my heart to solve the problem that bothered me, believing that this solution was the final word from higher celestial courts. Naive mistake. I forgot that if God has no religion, he has not temples too. It is the temples that believe to have God. So, to encounter Him, we don’t need not enter a temple, it is enough to be opened to the meeting. But it is very difficult nowadays to remain opened to it!

I left the temple aware that I had fulfilled my debt of gratitude, without knowing that the solution I had obtained a few days ago did not come from Him, but “through” Him, and especially not knowing that I had not learned the most important: what prompted the solution. Without that knowledge I would still always thanking the wrong way.

At the end of the iron fence I found the artist. When he saw me, he received me with great joy, but without a smile, as he put himself up - "I was waiting for you. My tiles are over and I need to go, but four of them I painted for you. "

I thought: Okay! The briskness again! Then, trying to be polite I said: "I paid him for two and only two are what I want." The man's response made me feel ashamed, "The other two are my gift to you ..."

I hesitated briefly, trying to find out what the intent behind the act, but he seemed to guess my thoughts. "Accept it, please. It's my way of saying thanks. "

At this point a lady came up, and after informing herself of the price asked for three paintings. The painter replied: "Sorry, my blank tiles isover…" The woman insisted: "What about these four painting on the floor?" Under my incredulous look he said, pointing at me:

"It belongs to him" The woman walked away disappointed.

A punch in my stomach would not have greater effect on me. "Buddy, you lost twelve dollars! Why did you do it?

His black eyes looked at me intensely, and he asked: "If I smile, you promise you won’t smile?" I look him without understanding. "Is that my teeth are nothing nice." I said: "Who smile is the heart, my friend, not the teeth!" "I thought you did not know to laugh"

Then he smiled! There were no teeth, only blackened stumps, burned in a way that I had never seen. There were just cavities, or something else that I could not identify. I thought it was a degenerative disease of the gums.

He shortened the smile, and again seriously,he answered the question that I ask silently to myself. "Crack, and thanks to it, I unlearn laughing."

Another punch in the stomach. "Are you addicted?"

"No! I’m clean for eight years! I can no longer even smell it, but it will always be with me when I laugh ... Accept, please "- he insisted, as he handed me the four beautifully painted tiles, with the ink still fresh, packaged in small blue plastic case. "Friend, I can not accept. This is your livelihood! I’ll pay for four then." He became more serious.

"Selling to sell I could have sold to that lady. Please accept. "

Reluctantly I took the four paintings, as he asked. "What have I done to deserve this gift with so much sacrifice on your part?"

His black eyes, hardened by life on the streets welled.

"You squat down and stood beside me watching me painting. You crouched down!"- He pointed - "to my level, enjoying my features, really interested in my work! This is priceless! I’d like to be a famous artist to give you a famous painting, because you treated me like a person. But my pictures are worth only ten dollars. It is not too much, but it’s all I can offer”

His eyes sparkled

"You have no idea what it feels like an animal, a foundling. It was a very old man, with whom I shared a prison cell that showed me this painting technique. He died soon after. I never saw him again, but what he taught me got me out of crack. "

A lump in my throat almost kept me from saying: "It is very difficult to get out of the crack. How did you get? "

He replied: "It was not just painting, but the fact that it has done that people paid attention to me and treat me like a person. What saved me of the crack that was that magic word called 'attention'. The same attention that you gave me when you crouch beside me on the street in the heart of the city and share with me this gift, which I not even know if I deserve."

I drew from my pocket a visiting card and gave him, asking him to find me, because I would strive to spread his art.

We parted with a firm handshake, after which the artist disappeared into the crowd which filled by the São Bento Street.

In the tower of the monastery the bells rang five times. I looked again at the tower and could only mumble.

"Thanks."
